WHAT IS TALENT ?

The concept of talent is elusive -- it lacks substance, specificity. Perhaps that's part of the reason so many people have trouble applying it to themselves. Carefully examining and refining the concept of talent may make it easier for you to recognize it in yourself and others, in order to make the most of it in your daily life. What is it, for example, that distinguishes talent from related -- but very different -- concepts, such as competency or style? In other words Talent is the innate desire to fully express the potential of our souls with our unique interests and abilities. When we discover and use our particular talents with clear and meaningful purpose, we feel connected to each other and important in the world. The successful expression of talent sparks a profound sense of happiness and inspires a spirit of generosity and hope in all of those who are touched by that talent.

National Energy Education Development Project

The NEED mission

The program also educates students about energy efficiency and conservation while providing tools to help educators, energy managers, and consumers use energy wisely.

NEED’s curriculum

In a special partnership with the Energy Information Administration, NEED helps make energy information and data available to students via the EIA Kid's Page website. NEED welcomes partners who vitalize the NEED network with new curriculum materials and new schools. NEED partnerships are growing each day, and every new partnership allows more teachers and students to benefit from NEED’s comprehensive energy education curriculum, training, and student leadership programs. NEED sponsors and partners recognize the value of educating tomorrow’s workforce for careers in energy. Providing teachers with innovative training programs and opportunities to increase their own energy knowledge is a major objective of the NEED program.

Some NEED states also sponsor summer energy camps for kids, spring break day camps, and overnight energy weekends.

The NEED network

State programs are a vital component of NEED's mission. NEED’s new newsletter, Career Currents, exposes students to the diversity of energy careers. NEED sponsors and partners believe in the importance of a comprehensive energy education program that helps teachers and students understand energy and its impacts on their world.

Talent Development Center

A Talent Development Center is a time and place for kids to try new things, learn at their own pace, and find areas in which they might have natural talent, or talent areas they would like to develop and master. It is a time and place filled with irresistably fun books, tools, toys, instruments and kits that inspire creativity, develop talent, and reflect the unique interests of the young people who use the Center.
It could even be a special time without a dedicated space: "Okay, everyone, it's Talent Development time. At home, parents can set up a Talent Development Center in a spare room, attic, basement, closet or an area in a child’s bedroom.

In a Talent Development Center or at Talent Development time, kids are free to explore what interests them in a warm and exciting environment that welcomes new ideas, and embraces "mistakes" and "failures" because they lead us to success. Kids learn at their own pace and are in charge of what they learn.
